Ehlers Pest Management offers fall pest control in Milwaukee and across Southeastern Wisconsin for homes covered in box elder bugs, Asian lady beetles, stink bugs and the spiders that follow them. In October, these bugs gather by the hundreds on the warm sides of your house, looking for a way into your walls. Once they’re in, they spend the winter there and come back out on warm days in spring. A certified technician treats the outside of your home to cut down how many make it inside.
We’re locally owned and veteran-owned, and we’ve been treating Wisconsin homes since 2010.
They look a lot like ladybugs, but their color ranges from yellow-orange to red, with or without spots. Most have a black “M” or “W” shaped mark on the white area just behind the head. When they’re disturbed, they can bite and give off a yellow fluid with a strong smell.
About half an inch long and black, with red or orange lines along the back and the edges of the wings. They’re often found near box elder and maple trees.
Spiders move toward the same warm walls to feed on the bugs gathering there. Spider control is part of our general pest control service, which covers the inside and outside of your home.
Shield-shaped and mottled brown, a little over half an inch long. They’re slow and clumsy fliers, and they release a strong odor when they’re crushed or threatened.
A certified technician walks the outside of your home to see which walls the bugs favor and where they're likely getting in.
Even with a good treatment, some bugs will still find their way inside. Our goal is to greatly reduce how many get in, and we'll be upfront about that from the start.
We apply treatment to the exterior walls, eaves and the areas around windows and doors where these bugs collect. This service is exterior only. For larger homes, big landscapes or second and third story peaks, the technician may recommend Pro Spray, our truck-mounted equipment with a 300-foot hose.
These bugs have two peak seasons in Southeastern Wisconsin, typically May and September. Treating before they gather keeps the numbers down, so the technician will recommend a schedule that fits your home.
As the nights get colder, box elder bugs, lady beetles and stink bugs start looking for somewhere warm to spend the winter. The sunny south and west walls of your home are the warmest spot around, so that’s where they gather. Spiders show up too, because all those bugs make an easy meal.
From the siding, they work their way into gaps around windows, doors, soffits and trim, and then into your wall voids.
Once they’re in your walls, they go quiet for the winter, so you might not notice much for a while. Then a warm day in late winter or early spring wakes them up, and they start coming out around window frames, outlets and light fixtures.
For a lot of homeowners, that’s the first sign there was a problem back in the fall.
They’re mostly a nuisance. They don’t eat wood or damage your home’s structure, but a large group can:
A certified technician will inspect your home, tell you what you’re dealing with and recommend a plan that fits.
