Pest control for schools and colleges

Scheduled around the school day and the school year.

Ehlers Pest Management provides school pest control in Milwaukee and across Southeastern Wisconsin. We work with schools, colleges and similar buildings to handle mice, cockroaches, ants and stinging insects in classrooms, cafeterias, storage areas and the grounds around the building.

Every account starts with an inspection by a certified technician, who finds where pests are getting in and what’s drawing them. From there, we recommend service that fits your building and your calendar, so treatment happens when students and staff aren’t in the way.

What Pests Show Up In Schools?

A small brown mouse with large ears and black eyes stands on a rough, brown surface, looking alert.

Mice and Rats

They move indoors when the weather cools, and older school buildings have plenty of gaps around pipes and doors. Cafeterias and storage rooms give them food and nesting material.

A trail of ants walking across a stone surface at a university.

Ants

Snacks in classrooms and teachers’ lounges draw them in through small cracks. One trail usually means a colony nearby.

A large group of cockroaches, mostly lying on their backs with legs up, densely packed together. One cockroach stands out as it is upright among the rest.

Cockroaches

Kitchens, cafeterias and restrooms give them the moisture and food they need. They also come in on deliveries and in boxes.

Several yellow and black paper wasps gathered on a honeycomb nest, a common subject of study in schools and universities.

Wasps and Yellow Jackets

They build nests near playgrounds and rooflines in late summer and early fall, right when students are back outside.

Why Do Schools Choose Ehlers?

A certified technician does the inspection. They walk the building, explain what they found and arrive prepared to start.

Service fits the school calendar. We plan routine visits around the school day and save treatments that need an empty building for breaks.

You’ll talk to someone local. Calls go to our Southeastern Wisconsin office, and the person who answers is certified.

Locally owned and veteran-owned. We’ve served Southeastern Wisconsin since 2010.

A small brown mouse with big black eyes sits on a log. There is green moss in the background and a small red cluster of berries on the right side, creating a scene often encountered by local pest management professionals.

Why do schools see more mice in the winter?

When temperatures drop, mice look for warmth and food, and a school building has both. Cafeterias and stored supplies give them food, and older buildings tend to have more gaps for them to get in. Once they’re inside, they don’t leave on their own.

Winter break is a good time to get ahead of it. With the building quiet, the technician can check bait stations, look for new activity and point out entry points before students are back.

How Does Ehlers Handle Pest Control for Schools?

It starts with an inspection

A certified technician walks the building inside and out, including the kitchen, cafeteria, storage areas, mechanical rooms and the exterior. We look for where pests are getting in and what's drawing them.

Some treatments wait for a break

Certain treatments need the space empty, both for safety and so the treatment has time to work. When that's the case, we'll plan them for a weekend or a school break, and we'll tell you before anything is scheduled.

Service is scheduled around your day

Routine service is planned around class time, so it's usually done before or after school hours. Most schools have monthly or quarterly service, depending on the building and what the technician finds.

Treatment is targeted and environmentally responsible

We use Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which means finding the source, treating where pests are active and using tamper-resistant bait stations for rodents. Every product is applied by a certified technician, and we plan treatment around when students are in the building.

How can schools keep pests out?

Pest proofing, also called exclusion, seals the gaps pests use to get in. In schools, the usual trouble spots are worn door sweeps, gaps where utilities enter the building and openings around vents. The technician will point these out during the inspection, and sealing them is available as a separate service when it makes sense for your building.

A few habits help too:

  • Store classroom snacks and cafeteria food in sealed containers
  • Empty classroom and lunchroom trash at the end of each day
  • Keep exterior doors closed, especially near the kitchen and loading area
  • Report droppings, trails or nests to the office so they can be passed along quickly

Frequently Asked Questions about school pest control

Will treatment happen while students are in the building?

Routine service is usually scheduled before or after school hours. Treatments that need the space empty are planned for weekends or breaks. We’ll tell you what’s needed before anything is scheduled.

It depends on the building. Many schools have monthly service, especially for rodents and kitchen areas, and others do well with quarterly visits. The technician recommends a schedule after the inspection.

We use tamper-resistant bait stations and place them where the activity is, usually in kitchens, storage areas, mechanical rooms and along the outside of the building. The technician will walk you through where each one goes.

Yes. We treat paper wasps and yellow jackets around entrances, playgrounds, rooflines and sports fields. If a nest is in a spot we can’t safely reach, we’ll tell you and talk through the options.

Pest proofing is available as a separate service. Whether it makes sense depends on your building, and the technician will talk it through with you after the inspection.
